Over A Cup Of Tea (11 Dec 2003)


Traces the development of "yum cha" (tea-drinking) culture in Hong Kong which dates back to the late Qing dynasty with the opening of the first restaurant in Wellington Street and becomes an integral part of the local culinary culture. In the pre-war era, restaurants belong to the rich class' dining places. After the war and around 1950s, with the influx of the mainland immigrants, "yum cha" becomes a popular cultural activity. It booms and flourishes in the 1960s and 1970s until the upsurge of new style restaurants which emphasize systematic and modern management. Renowned restaurants of different periods are featured.
