The Faust Festival; Pianist Lang Lang; Violinist Sarah Chang; Film Review: "The Upside of Anger" (31 May 2005)

The Faust International Youth Theatre was formed in Hong Kong in 1999 to introduce young people to the joys of the stage and the performing arts. The Sixth Faust Festival is showcasing theatre by and for the young, up until June 19th. Pianist Lang Lang plays in Hong Kong tonight (May 31st). His concert is sold out. We talk to him about his art, Rachmaninov, Russia, and the sometimes negative comments of critics. Lang Lang is playing in Hong Kong with the Philadelphia Orchestra, coincidentally one of the first orchestras with which Philadelphia-born violinist Sarah Chang performed as soloist. She spoke to us this week about learning new repertory, collaborating with Andrew Lloyd-Webber, and why shopping and movie-going are sometimes better than violin practice. Our movie review this week focuses on "The Upside of Anger". The romantic comedy is a welcome return to form for actor Kevin Costner, features a great performance from Joan Allen, and is subtly written and directed by Mike Binder. If only it weren't for that awful twist in the tail.
