LOAN POLICY FOR AV MATERIALS [14 Mar 2003]

LOAN POLICY FOR AV MATERIALS: The Library reviews its loan rules each year. A new set of loan rules, including the number of books/AV materials to be borrowed and the loan periods, etc. will be proposed to the Information & Library Services Committee in its May/June meeting and to be effective from the new Academic Year after proper endorsement. We shall be happy to look into the loan policy of AV materials and discuss if a revision is necessary.

LIBRARY OPENING HOURS [5 Mar 2003]

LIBRARY OPENING HOURS: The Library opens from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., i.e. 8.5 hours, on Saturday. Due to resources constraint, we do not have any plan to extend the opening hours on Saturday.

INTERLIBRARY LOAN SERVICES [5 Mar 2003]

INTERLIBRARY LOAN SERVICES: Users of self-financed programmes are only entitled to limited inter-library loan service at this stage. If you require more reference materials for your research paper, please feel free to discuss your topic with Dr. Francis Chan, Reference Librarian, and see if additional information is available in the Lingnan Library.

RENEWAL POLICY [4 Feb 2003]

RENEWAL POLICY:  As an academic library, in most cases we acquire only 1 copy for each book title. Library loan rules are designed for enabling an adequate access to limited information resources by all users. Renewal (up to 3 times) is only applicable to those charged books that nobody is looking for. As you are aware, another user, out of assignment or research purposes, is now wanting this book and he or she would like to have a timely access to the same piece of information.

CHARGE OF COLOUR LASER PRINTING AND SLOW PROCESSING TIME OF NETWORK PRINTING [31 Oct 2002]

CHARGE OF COLOUR LASER PRINTING AND SLOW PROCESSING TIME OF NETWORK PRINTING: Due to the high running cost of colour laser printers, the charge of colour printing at the Library is higher than that of the GE building, where an inkjet printer is used. However, we are considering reducing the printing charge to make the service more affordable.

HARDCOVER AND BOOK STRENGTHENING [28 Oct 2002]

HARDCOVER AND BOOK STRENGTHENING: The funding for Library materials has been decreasing in the past few years, in order to acquire the same number of books, we must purchase more paperbacks instead. At the same time, the book preservation budget is also small. We can only afford to strengthen some essential items. In fact, the cost of strengthening some Chinese books is higher than the prices of the books themselves. In this connection, the Library will not provide hardcovers for those inexpensive items that replacement copies can be ordered without difficulties.

Answers to Suggestions (2 Oct 2002)

LOAN PERIODS FOR SOME AV MATERIALS: Audio cassette and video cassette tapes are damaged easily. The Library is particularly concerned with tape format materials as they cannot be repaired or replaced easily. Moreover, some materials are very expensive to purchase. The Library prefers users to use tape format materials inside the Multimedia & Language Learning Centre because in case a damage is caused from the library AV equipment, the users will not be held responsible.

LIBRARY OPENING HOURS [24 Jun 2002]

LIBRARY OPENING HOURS: As staff, utility and other operational costs of opening the Library are high, we cannot afford to maintain the same opening hours (i.e. from 8:45 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.) throughout the year. Therefore, opening hours can only be adjusted according to the actual usage. When the demand for services is high, e.g. during examination period, the Library will open until 10:30 p.m. and even on public holidays. In summer, when few students are on campus, the Library will cut short its opening hours.

CHECKING OUT AV MATERIALS [25 Mar 2002]

CHECKING OUT AV MATERIALS: In the past many discs were returned to the Library with scratches on them. We are not sure if the scratches were made by the user or not. To check the discs at counter before taking them out will protect the user from being charged the replacement cost if scratches are already there.

MLLC COLLECTION [9 Jan 2002]

MLLC COLLECTION: Part of the MLLC Collection is used for language teaching and listening purposes. Please note that some students use audio books to learn the American accent. The age group as specified in the bibliographic record is designed for the English speaking community.
